The new and improved Medal video editor is here!

The Medal editor has always been the place to add text or a quick effect to your clips, but you may have noticed it felt a little outdated and slow, with only a small handful of options.

That's why we decided to give it the major upgrade it deserves...and it's still totally free for all users:

TL;DR: The upgraded editor can handle more complex edits, with more creative effects and options, all while being simple to use, and renders video significantly faster than before.

With Medal's powered-up new editor finally here, let's get into the upgrades:

What’s in the updated Medal video editor?

The new editor introduces a broad set of useful tools and quality improvements. Here are the biggest upgrades we're excited about:

  • Multi-track editing for video and audio
  • Detachable audio tracks
  • Scene transitions for pro (or cursed) montages
  • Animated captions for helpful visuals and clarity
  • New video effects and filters with tons of options (playback speed controls, zoom, freeze frame, chroma key, and much more)
  • More quality and size settings (resolution, height, width, FPS, anti-aliasing etc.!)

You can upload your own music, images, and sound effects into the editor, and a built-in music selector is coming soon to expand your audio options even further.

Still simple, still free

Even with all these upgrades, the editor keeps Medal’s core goal intact: it should feel quick and easy, from capture to edit to share in seconds/minutes, not hours. We were very focused on keeping it clean and familiar, so you can try new effects and features without feeling overwhelmed.

Simple edit or complex montage; the upgraded editor gives you far more control.

When can I start using the upgraded editor?

The new editor is slowly rolling it out to users over the next few weeks (November/December 2025), and we'll let you know in app when it's available on your account.

(Need it now? Switch over to Early Access, where thousands of users have been already using the new editor, although we expect the new editor will be rolled out to all users no later than the end of December 2025)

Create your best clips yet

FAQ

How do I access the Medal editor?
If you need to do more than trim down a clip's length, click "Open in Editor" on any clip in your library, or press "New Edit" to open a blank timeline to add clips to.

Where can I adjust opacity or make something look transparent?
Select any visual asset on the timeline and find "Effects > Adjustments > Alpha", and adjust the slider accordingly. "Effects" is located near the top right side of the editor. You can adjust effects on any visuals e.g. text, clips, gifs, and stickers.

How can I add a freeze frame?
Select the desired location in your clip and find "General > Insert Freeze Frame".

How do I adjust speed (slow motion or fast)
Select and find "General > Playback Speed". You can adjust the speed of the clip from 0.25x to 4x using the slider.

How do I add music or sound effects?
Click "Audio" on the left side of the editor and import any sound effects or audio files. We'll be adding built-in music and SFX soon to make this even easier. For now, we recommend using a soundboard site to easily download your favorite sound effects.

How do I split a clip in two or more pieces?
Press Control+K, S, or the scissors icon to insert a "split" in clips. The split will be inserted wherever you're selected on the clip. Then you can edit those specific portions for audio, filters, transitions, animations, etc.

I'm struggling with animations and transitions!
"Transitions" are specifically animations between 2 clips (or portions of clips that you've split).

Are there hotkeys?
Yes! The editor has convenient hotkeys for copy, paste, arrow keys, zoom, delete, undo, redo, and more. Click the ⓘ icon in the top right of the Editor to explore all hotkeys.

We hope you enjoy exploring the new ways you can edit your clips, and can't wait to see what you make (podcasts, fail videos, montages, war photography, pro plays, guides, and whatever else you dream up!) The new editor should feel just as simple to use as always, but it's packed with way more options and features. Enjoy!!
